23-year old rookie QB Cody Kessler has been quickly ruled out by the Cleveland Browns for next week’s home game against the New York Giants.  He suffered his second concussion this month and he will undergo an MRI in the near future to determine if he can play against this year.  Kessler was injured yesterday on a big time cheap shot by Steelers’ LB Lawrence Timmons, but what do you expect from a Pittsburgh player?  Kessler has played in 8 games (all starts) this year for the Browns and he has completed 126 of 192 passes (65.6%) for 1,369 yards with 6 TD passes and 2 INTs (92.6 QB Rating).  He also has carried the ball 11 times for 18 yards (1.6 ypc) so far this year.  With the Browns’ offensive line in it’s current state, they should probably just shut Kessler down for the rest of the year.  The next thing to ponder is if it’s better to start 37-year old Josh McCown or 24-year old rookie Kevin Hogan in place of Kessler.  I don’t blame head coach Hue Jackson if he picks to go with McCown, which is likely.  He is still trying to win ball games and McCown would give them a better chance than Hogan would right now.  McCown has played in 4 games (2 starts) so far this year and he has completed 65 of 122 passes (53.3%) for 778 yards with 5 TD passes and 6 INTs (66.2 QB Rating).  He has also carried the ball 7 times for 21 yards (3.0 ypc) so far this year.  But does McCown really give the Browns a better chance to win than Hogan does.  He is 0-2 as a starter this year and he is 1-9 (10%) in his two years with the Browns.  McCown is also a classic drop back type of passer, so he is likely going to get beat up behind the Browns’ O-Line.  Hogan is not nearly as good of a passer as McCown is, but he can move in the pocket.  Hogan has played in 3 games (0 starts) so far this year for the Browns and he has completed 14 of 26 passes (53.8%) for 104 yards with 0 TD passes and 2 INTs (31.6 QB Rating).  Hogan has also carried the ball 8 times for 105 yards (13.1 ypc) with 1 TD run so far this year.  Why not give Hogan a chance in December to see if he is a legit QB or not?  What do they have to lose?
